While Justin Fields has locked down the starting quarterback job for Ryan Day, the backup position just got a lot murkier. Matthew Baldwin has entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Matthew Baldwin had just entered his second year with Ohio State after sitting out last year with an ACL tear. A four-star recruit out of high school in Texas, Baldwin figured to be next in line after Tate Martell before any Buckeye fans had even considered Justin Fields.
However, since there’s no end to the craziness in the NCAA, Justin Fields, who was a quarterback at Georgia a year ago is the successor to Dwayne Haskins, who’s entered the NFL draft. Fields took the job that was presumptively Tate Martell’s, who now is quarterbacking for Miami (FL), and Fields’ presumed backup (Baldwin) is now seeking a transfer.
…Got all that? Yeah me neither. Here’s the important stuff: Justin Fields is IN, Matthew Baldwin is OUT.
Baldwin is actually the third quarterback in recent history to transfer out of Ohio State, the others being Martell and Joe Burrow before the start of last season.
So, it looks like Fields’ backup this season will be… Chris Chugunov, a grad transfer who has two NCAA starts from his time at West Virginia.
UPDATE: Matthew Baldwin took to Twitter to share this statement:
