How out-of-towners handle homesickness.
It doesn’t matter if it’s your first year on campus, or your last—at some point throughout your time here at OSU, you are going to miss the familiarity of home. Whether that’s seeing the friendly faces and relationships you’ve built, sitting down to a nice home cooked meal from mom, or just spending a day in the town that shaped you, there’s some things home offers that campus just can’t match.
Alas, that’s just the way it goes.
But the good news is this university has been around for awhile now and there’s been plenty before you who have came from afar, withstood the tests and trials of college, and lived to tell the tales. Next time you are feeling dreary about not going home anytime soon, check out some of these tips from some out-of-state students.

When I’m feeling homesick, I like to… Call my parents. Hearing a familiar voice is usually enough to make me feel better and they love it when I call them to check in.
When I’m feeling like I need a home cooked meal, I go to… Chick-Fil-A. I practically grew up on it and ate it probably more than I should have but it always reminds me of the one in my hometown.
When I want something that reminds me of my hometown, I usually… Throw on one of my hoodies from high school sports.
When I do go home, the one thing I miss about campus is…The ability to come and go as I please without anybody asking me where I’m going or what I’m doing.

When I’m feeling homesick, I like to… I didn’t get homesick a lot as a freshman, but when I got down about anything in general, be it school or relationships, missing home, or anything else it was always good to just keep myself busy and keep my mind off things. Stay involved with student orgs and spend time with friends, anything to keep your mind off things that are bothering you.
When I’m feeling like I need a home cooked meal, I go to… I would either go to Bob Evans on Olentangy River Road or I would just go home with one of my friends who live in Columbus and eat at their house when they invited me.
When I want something that reminds me of my hometown, I usually… Invite friends from back home to come down and visit! Columbus is much more interesting than my hometown, so people were always interested in visiting Columbus to see what it’s like and check out the campus.
When I do go home, the one thing I miss about campus is… I miss my friends, being independent, how close the gyms are on campus. I also miss being on a schedule. When I’m at school I tend to be more organized and productive, but at home I usually end up on the couch watching TV and eating whenever I get too bored.
