Foul-Mouthed Foodie: Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea

Guys, it is so HARD to find a decent spot for coffee on campus. Don’t even get me started on trying to get work done at any of these spots. Little did I know that a few years ago, our blue enemy up north snuck down to our humble abode and opened a coffee and tea spot around the corner from the Chick-fil-A on High St.

Sweetwaters is dope, y’all. The first thing that struck me when I walked inside was how comfy and cute the coffeehouse was. It has a huge Buckeye mural, and they offer free WiFi. The walls are covered in copies of famous paintings like Starry Night, and they have plugs galore for you to get all your work done.

Because I have zero chill, I ordered four desserts, a stuffed croissant and three drinks. I kept telling myself I had to do it for the job, but honestly, I’m just a fucking gourmande. So, in terms of pastries, I got a gluten free blueberry muffin, a blueberry cheesecake, a cream cheese coffee cake, and a slice of zucchini bread. If I’m being honest, the pastries were not AWESOME. I don’t see the appeal in blueberries in general, but I digress. The muffin was surprisingly good, if dense. The cheesecake was very soft and sweet. However, the coffee cake was a bit dry, which I guess is fine if you’re dipping it in coffee. This was also my first-time trying zucchini bread and HOLY SHITBALLS, it’s so good! Because I went there for breakfast and didn’t want to seem like a lost soul, I also ordered a stuffed croissant. The croissant was so warm and delicious. The crust was super buttery and it fell apart in my mouth.

Even though I was a bit disappointed with the pastries, I cannot say the same for the drinks. MY GOODNESS. Y’all, I’m a freaking hater when it comes to American coffee. Puerto Ricans take their coffee super seriously. Sweetwaters did NOT disappoint. I ordered a vanilla latte, a caramel ice dragon, and a hand-rolled dragon pearl jasmine green tea. Guys. Y’all just don’t understand. These drinks were GOOD. The vanilla latte was perfect. I usually add sugar to my coffee but nope. It wasn’t needed. I got a decent caffeine boost from it, too. The ice dragon was better than a frappuccino. There, I said it. It was sweet and refreshing and didn’t leave me feeling like I needed to drink a bottle of water afterwards. But the tea, guys. The tea was delicious. The lovely barista told me that because the pearls are rolled so tightly, you can get up to two steeps of the same tea bag. IT WAS PERFECT. And to make matters even… well, better, they also have coffee samples by the counter. My guys. They had a strawberry and cream coffee that was actually fucking delicious. I’m a fan. This is all I can say.

If you happen to really like what they offer, you can buy the coffee they sell by the bag, or you can buy the tea. They also have a selection of t-shirts with funny sayings. This place is a hidden gem in Columbus. I’m a firm believer in supporting local coffee shops, and I’ve talked about some in the past but there’s something about Sweetwaters that I really appreciate… even if they’re from THAT state.
