After two weeks of major blockbusters taking the attention, two of the most critically-acclaimed movies of the year come to Gateway in the same weekend, along with a Wes Anderson classic and a sci-fi extravaganza.
First Reformed – June 1
Ethan Hawke stars in this movie by Paul Schrader about a priest in a small Reform Church that faces problems from those who seek his assistance, as well as inner struggles that all come to fruition at once. The movie has been nothing but praised by critics to this point, and this A24-produced film looks to continue that studio’s hot streak.
The Rider – June 1
The top-rated movie of 2018 on Metacritic as of this very moment, “The Rider” has taken audiences and critics by storm with its heartfelt true story. The film centers on a rodeo star who has a near-death accident that forces him to quit what he loves, and the struggles he faces while searching for a new identity. See if the movie lives up to the hype this Friday at Gateway.
Fantastic Mr. Fox – June 1
Coming back to the big screen as a part of Gateway’s From Book to Film series, Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox” returns in all of its symmetric glory. This stop-motion film starring George Clooney and Meryl Streep is equal parts funny and beautiful. The movie is wild, witty and unique, and deserves your attention if you’ve missed it to this point.
Sci-fi Sleepover: Summer Edition – June 2
Starting at midnight for $25, Gateway invites audience members to stay overnight at the theater for their Sci-fi Sleepover event, which involves four films of varying quality and varying themes from the sci-fi genre. “Slither,” “Stargate,” “War Games” and the 1968 version of “Planet of the Apes” are the movies, and the party before the films starts at 11.
