An all-female spin-off and one of the most talked about horror films of the decade are what’s headlining the new releases at the Gateway Film Center this weekend.
Oceans 8 – June 7
Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna among many others star in this heist film that looks to bring a new female twist to the franchise. “Oceans 8” follows Debbie Ocean, sister of George Clooney’s Danny, as she creates a team of women to take a $150 million necklace. The cast is filled to the brim with talent, and Gary Ross (“The Hunger Games,” “Seabiscuit”) has proven his ability to direct, so let’s hope that they combine for a worthy installment to this acclaimed franchise.
Hereditary – June 7
One of 2018’s best movies, and one of the highest rated horror films of the century, finally gets it’s Gateway release this weekend in the form of “Hereditary”. Ari Aster wrote and directed this film about a family that begins to unravel following their grandmother’s death. The film has been labeled “this generation’s ‘The Exorcist'” by Time Out’s Joshua Rothkopf, so look for this one to scare the hell out of you this weekend.
Little Women – June 8
Another installment of Gateway’s from book to film series is this 1994 classic starring Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon and Kirsten Dunst, as well as a teenage Christian Bale. The movie is about the March sisters growing up in the post-Civil War era. Find out why this film earned its three Oscar nominations on the big screen 24 years later.
First Reformed – June 8
Pushed back a week after I said that it was coming to Gateway last weekend, this critically-acclaimed movie by A24 starring Ethan Hawke is still one to keep on the radar as it hits theaters this Friday.
