Bartenders come in all shapes and sizes, and from all walks of life. Who’s to say who is best equipped to give you what you need when you sit down across the bar? Bartenders. Professional babysitters, part-time psychologists, and a drunk’s best friend in the moment. When you need to know the best spots to get your drink on around campus and who to chat up while you’re there, we’ve got you.
What’s the craziest or weirdest thing you’ve seen as a bartender?
We had someone passed out in the girls’ room after we closed, but we didn’t find her until we were cleaning the place at 3 a.m. And she was in a stall and the door was locked, so I had to crawl under the door and unlock it to get her out and get her home.
What’s the best way to get your attention on a busy night?
We know you need a drink if you’re up here. Don’t be aggressive. Eye contact helps. Sliding your drink down to the other side of the bar is also good.
What’s the worst way to get your attention on a busy night?
Waving your card or waving your hand. Tapping me—actually tapping me is the worst. Just being obnoxious.
What’s one song that is overplayed at the bar?
Sweet Caroline definitely. The most over-requested song is Freebird though. People love to ask for that, but we’re not playing it—it’s too long.
What’s your go-to cocktail lately?
I’m a whiskey drinker so just a whiskey on the rocks. I’ve been drinking Angel’s Envy lately. I like the regular and the rye.
What’s your go-to beer lately?
I’m pretty simple with my beer—I like lighter beers mostly. Yuengling is good. If we’re drinking IPA’s, I like the Purple Haze.
When you aren’t at Threes, what bar are you typically found at?
Somewhere in the Short North. I usually start at Barrel On High and bar hop from there. When I’m staying in the campus area, Out-R-Inn.
What do you like to do with your free time outside of bartending?
I love the outdoors so hiking or biking (road biking). The trails are usually really clear after the football season, so I’m looking forward to that.
If you could grab a drink with anyone—dead or alive—who would it be and what would you drink?
I’d drink with Matthew McConaughey. I love his acting and I just feel like he’d have stories for days. And we’d drink Wild Turkey.
Threes Above High is the follow-up to Too’s Spirits Under High; which one is better and why?
They’re both very different. Too’s was smaller and it was a little better for bartending because you only had a small section to work. But overall I think Threes is a better bar, I like it more.
Finish the sentence: Threes is the best bar on campus because…
The staff is the best. We’re like a family here. It’s the reason we have such a low turnover rate. We treat you like one of us when you’re here.
