And… action!: (some of) the Times Ohio State/Columbus Were in Movies

Pretty much the coolest thing in the world is when you hear a rapper call out your city in a song. Think of Big Sean with Detroit, or Drake with Toronto or your favorite rapper with whatever city they’re from. It’s honestly so cool because you can just be like fuck yeah, that rapper is talking about ME and MY CITY and you feel a strong connection, blah blah.

Well, this is slightly less cool, but still worth mentioning. Ohio State is one of the most famous schools in the world, so of course it’s been mentioned, seen and brought up in quite a few movies. Columbus is probably a little lesser known, but it’s still cool to see the skyline, or a city staple or something that you recognize from your city in a movie. And that’s what this article is: me being excited that my school and city were in movies (or TV shoes)

I am Wrath (2016)

This 2016 flick featured John Travolta and was a crime/drama with a badass poster tagline that read “No Justice Without Blood,” which might make you wonder why there are donuts anywhere in the plot, but they are there nonetheless. There might not have been much to the scene that included the south location of Buckeye Donuts (not affiliated with the one on campus, sadly), but it was still cool to see the giant sign in the background.

The Breakfast Club (1985)

This cult classic is a favorite to many. Your stoner friend in high school probably introduced you to the film (or you were the stoner friend that showed all your friends) featuring characters who are high school archetypes and using a day in detention to smoke weed and get to know each other. Obviously, there’s more to it than that (just go watch it if you haven’t), but something you might have missed is that the jock’s car (Andrew Clark, played by Emilio Estevez) has a license plate that reads “OHIOST.” So much for Ohio State being more than just a sports school.

Ready Player One (2018)

The mind of Steven Spielberg has given us some greats, From Jaws and Jurassic Park to The Post and Super 8 (he was a producer), but all of them are missing one thing to be in this article: they are not in Columbus or Ohio State. Ready Player One, though? It’s set in futuristic Columbus, Ohio. The gamer-centric world of 2045 ended up giving us some astonishing effects and a storyline that’s intriguing, even for people who aren’t big-time video game players. The back-and-forth between simulated and real danger that encompasses the High Five throughout makes for a pretty dope film, only made doper by the fact that it’s in Columbus, the greatest city on earth.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Season 4 Episode 1, “Coral Palms: Part 1” (2016-2017)

Listen, there’s not really a way to put this clip in here without somehow messing with copyrights and stuff, but if you’re a fan of the show (and you really really really should be), there’s a little thing at the beginning of season 1 that made my heart flutter with joy. The cerebral Raymond Holt, who is a career police officer known for his stoic personality, has to adopt a new identity. The new identity went to the very best school in the world.

The quote is (after being asked where he went to school): “Ohio State, where I majored in… (long, disappointed pause) Communications.” However, reading this quote isn’t going to do it justice, so just go watch the show. If you’re smart and use Spotify, Hulu is included for free in the membership so check it out. Or rent it on YouTube. Or watch it online somehow. However you do it, just go watch it, even if it’s just for this scene.
