After some very impressive performances, Dwayne Haskins (football) and Sade Olatoye (track & field) have been named the Ohio State Athletics male and female athletes of the year.
Anyone who pays attention to Ohio State football shouldn’t be surprised by Haskins winning the award, but you may be surprised to learn he’s the first football player to win the award since Troy Smith in 2007. Haskins’ greatness probably doesn’t need to be explained at this point, but if you’re curious, here goes: Haskins threw for 50 touchdowns and 4,831 yards last season and set a total of 28 Ohio State and 7 Big Ten records last season. More on that here.
Track & field might fly a bit under the radar for Ohio State fans, but Sade Olatoye is one of the great performers in school history. Olatoye holds four Ohio State records and was a huge leader in the team’s indoor and outdoor conference championships.
Both Haskins and Olatoye are now eligible to win the Big Ten Athlete of the Year award, and could continue Ohio State’s run in winning. Kyle Snyder (wrestling) took home the award in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018, so either of these two could make it three in a row for Ohio State.
