Ron Funches has done a lot of things in his comedy career, and you’ve probably been witness to a few. He’s toured the country doing stand-up. He’s the second winning-est contestant ever on Comedy Central’s @Midnight and a regular on Drunk History. He was a lead on NBC’s short-lived Undateable, and his distinctive voice can be heard on everything from Bob’s Burgers to Adventure Time to BoJack Horseman, and even 2016 kid’s movie Trolls. But Ron Funches has never told a joke in Columbus.
All that will change when his Funch-A-Mania Tour hits Woodlands Tavern on July 15. The 7:30 p.m. show is sold out, but a second show at 9:30 p.m. has been added, tickets are $20.
1870: Hey Ron, how are you? What are you up to?
RF: Heeeyyyy! It’s going good, just walking on this treadmill, keepin’ it moving!
1870: You’re getting ready to do your biggest headlining tour to date. So besides exercising, how are you getting ready?
RF: Well right now I’m just at home, getting ready for my son to graduate from eighth grade this weekend.
1870: Oh, congratulations!
RF: Thank you so much, I did all his homework for him! But just doing the dad thing before I hit the road, which is really fun. When I don’t have him I’m just sort of afloat, chasing girls.
1870: You’re doing two big shows in Columbus now, did you know you had such a big following here?
RF: I did not, who knew?? I’ve never even been to Columbus. I’ve been to Cincinnati once, but that’s it for Ohio. I’m excited!
1870: What do you like to get into on the road?
RF: The same kind of things I do at home, I bring my Playstation with me and keep up with whatever games I’m playing. I watch my Great British Bake-Off and my wrestling, and that’s about it.
1870: You really need to play a pro wrestler someday, seems like a perfect role, maybe you need to write that movie.
RF: Oh, I hope you’re just a sweet angel foretelling the future. (Editor: Found out immediately after this interview that he just sold a wrestling-themed cartoon to Seeso.)
1870: Are you going anywhere else on your tour for the first time?
RF: I’m going to Philadelphia, where I’ve only been once, but Columbus is the only place I’ve never been. I’m starting in New York, they’re bringing back Showtime at the Apollo, so I’m doing that, Philly, Boston, a few others and making my way to you folks in Ohio.
1870: Well it’s a Saturday night so I hope we can show you a good time!
RF: I would appreciate that very much!
1870: If someone wants to buy you a drink after the show, what should they get you?
RF: I’m allergic to alcohol, but if someone brings I joint I’ll definitely smoke it with you!
