The girl’s basketball Buckeyes are rolling through the season currently standing at first in the Big Ten and 13th in the nation. Thanks to the help of all-star athletes like redshirt senior, Stephanie Mavunga, who was recently named to the first team all-Big Ten squad, the Buckeyes are primed to make a championship run in the Big Ten Tournament this weekend and the ceiling is high for how deep they may go in the big tournament in March.
But, before Mavunga hits the court in Indy and terrorizes defenders, she gave us the lowdown on what life is like for her outside of basketball in this week’s installment of “Sidelines.”

If you are having a cheat day meal, what are you having?
I’ve been having far too many. I tend to lean on cheat meals rather than days. Going too “all out” all day is too much. I have to at least have a balance throughout the day. My weakness is sweets! Anything is fair game, cheesecake is a favorite, I love ice cream, milkshakes, Blizzards, cake, cobblers, cookies, brownies, etc. 😭 Also, I’m a big fan of a nice pan of baked mac n cheese. Love, love, love! Little fried things or cheese filled items get me here and there.
Between going to class, practice, and games, you must stay pretty busy. Do you have any tips for finding balance between it all?
My schedule is hectic, but it’s important to keep a healthy balance. My biggest key is priorities!! I have to understand that sometimes things will have to wait because they fall lower on the list of importance. I plan out my schedule. Write down due items at least a week in advance. The closer they get, I highlight them. I try to plan ahead of time. Think about the things I have to do each week and decide which day is best to execute a given task. Don’t wait until the last minute. Often times people stress because of the little time they leave for things. I try to avoid that, but like any human I sometimes cram and procrastinate. My best advice is to avoid procrastination and plan out time weekly to tackle each task for the week.
If you could play one-on-one with any athlete, who would you pick? Who would win?
I would love to play Lebron James! He’s my favorite player and I have great admiration of both his game and personality. I love what he stands for and how he carries himself. I just want the opportunity to get to know him and hang out one day. I would love for him to come to a game, or be able to play him. He would definitely win because he’s an INCREDIBLE ATHLETE!! In every single sense. I would try my best to give him a game, but I’m realistic. He’d get me.
Through all your time at Ohio State, what’s been your favorite memory, on or off the court, as a Buckeye?
My favorite moment thus far I guess would have to be the academic achievements. I will never forget taking a loss against UConn and after the game, I was in the hallway speaking with my mom about the game and I remember getting a notification that all my grades were finally in. The moment I clicked open my app I remember letting out a giant gasp and my mom asked what was wrong and I told her I had gotten all A’s. My heart was so happy. I worked so hard and it showed. It never gets old. That feeling when you’ve excelled academically is just different. The joy I had during the scholar athlete banquet. The smile I walked with the day I received my honors braids. To wear those two braids during graduation meant a lot. Looking down and realizing I had graduated with honors from such a distinguished institution. Getting accepted into grad school, putting my head on my hands as I read the acceptance letter and fast forward to this last semester. My first semester of grad school not knowing what to expect. Sitting in my living room refreshing the app daily looking for all of my grades again. A feeling I remember far too well. The fourth day, that third refresh and the last “A” appearing. That day I sat down, teared up and just remember looking to the sky, crossing my chest and whispering thank you. I thought I had felt true joy and a sense of accomplishment when I had done it a couple times before, but this one was most special. I remember telling my mom “I’m really in grad school mom. All A’s in grad school” that joy there was true joy. The academic success is easily my favorite memory here at Ohio State.
