Over last weekend the OSU Men’s Volleyball team took on McKendree University where the Bucks took the courts by storm and completed the weekend without a single loss. In the sports world, we call this taking out your brooms and sweeping away the competition.
After the sweep, the Buckeye’s roster has some eyes watching them—more specifically, Maxime Hervoir caught the eyes of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association which earned him the title of the MIVA Player of the Week. He came, he saw, and he totaled three aces, a pair of block assists for a total of 38 points, and on Friday he recorded 20 kills with a .548 attacking efficiency and three more aces. As if his performance wasn’t enough already, he came right back on Saturday with 14 more kills.
The Buckeyes are set to take on Big Ten foe Penn State next week on March 16 away from Columbus, but before they take to the courts, we caught up with the senior outside hitter from France, Maxime Hervoir, before he gets back to his hot hitting streak.
Can you give us five songs from your pre-volleyball game playlist?
I listen to French rap so you probably don’t know any of them haha. Some of my favorites are “Pitbull” by Booba, “Ça m’fait pas marrer” by Furax or “Martin Eden” by Nekfeu. But, it happens that I listen to some US rap too! In this case it would be stuff like “0 to 100” by Drake or “Work” by Q Money. I’m a big fan of rap, especially when I need motivation.
What’s your go-to meal if you have to cook at home?
Well we always have a pre-game meal provided, but I think I would do the same thing home! Ideally it’s a little bit of meat (preferably chicken); a lot of veggies, like a salad and some broccoli, zucchini, asparagus; and some carbs such as mashed potatoes or pasta. After that I get some fruit as desert and I’m ready to go! Oh and I’m being careful to stay hydrated along the day so water or Gatorade with the meal too!
Now that you are into your senior year, what has been your most memorable moment while at OSU (on or off the court)?
It was definitely when we won the Championship last year! All the other starters already won the previous year, but for me it was my first title since I was freshly arrived in the US! We played in St. John Arena in front of our public (8,300 people) and my dad came with my uncle to see me, it was incredible. On the top of that, I got the All-tournament team so I was very proud!
Who is the best dressed athlete on the volleyball team?
Tough question because I’m not really into fashion! I would say Sanil Thomas since he takes care of himself on a daily basis unlike some of us haha.
What has been your biggest adjustment you’ve had to make since moving to Ohio from France?
People often think that the hardest part was to go far from my family, but I used to go back home only twice a year even when I was in France because I was really busy! The biggest challenge for me has been to be able to express myself with my bad English. It was not that bad but it’s way better today! When I came here, I was struggling to understand group conversations and people had to slow down for me to understand. I’m usually a confident person that likes to joke around with people, but when I came here my English level didn’t allow me to do that anymore! So I worked hard to be able to be myself and today I’m really confident with my English, even if I still make a lot of mistakes!
