In case you didn’t know, it stormed pretty badly in Columbus today (Friday, June 8). As a result, I lost power at my house, so now all of you get the luxury of reading my list of things that you can do when the power is out that you might not consider when your electricity is fully functional.
YES – Watch Netflix, Hulu, whatever on your phone
I’m not going to lie. I tried to keep myself busy for awhile when my power went out, but ultimately I just laid in bed and watched, like, 10 episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It was fantastic.
NO – Stare into the fridge and think about snacking
I really hope this one is obvious to everyone out there. Don’t open your fridge when your power is out UNLESS it’s an emergency AND you know exactly what you’re grabbing. I’ve got one of those fancy fridges that tells you the temperature on the inside when it’s on, and we usually keep it at 33 degrees in the fridge and 0 in the freezer. When the power came back, it was 55 and 22. I didn’t even open the fridge the entire time.
YES – Snuggle up with a pup
I hate to break this news to everyone, but my dog is the cuddliest one in the world. He’s an old boy, but he loves cuddling no matter what time of day it is. Just woke up? Let’s go back to sleep. Just came in from outside? Heck yes, pass the covers. Almost lunch time? Eh, how about a quick nap. And this is the perfect time to take advantage of that. Your pup will love cuddling and taking a nap (hopefully).
NO – Get work done
Probably to the disdain of my editor, I thought that it would be a smart idea to try to do some work on my laptop with the power down. Without much else to do around the house, it seemed like a perfect idea. However, my stupid ass forgot that you need electricity for your router. Don’t be as stupid as me.
YES – Board Games
Everyone loves a couple rounds of Clue or Connect 4 when the power is out. Open the blinds and let the light in, and get your game on! Sure, it’s second-rate to all the Fortnite you could be playing, but board games kick ass when the power is out. Just don’t play monopoly, because the competitive people in your household are NOT going to want to stop just because the power came back on. Trust me on this one. I am that competitive person.
