Ohio State Makes Statement against Maryland

The Skinny:

So clearly this isn’t the Maryland team that was giving everyone a scare at the start of the year. I don’t even know if that Maryland team was ever real, to be honest. But if there was ever a way to send a message by beating a non-ranked conference opponent, the Bucks did it on Saturday afternoon.

Ohio State rolled to a 62-14 win over the Terrapins, in another game that is giving this team more and more confidence every week. It’s no Penn State (that’s weird to say), Michigan or Wisconsin, but they are starting to look like they’re in a groove to take on those giants.

The MVP:

The Bucks’ defense. They let up 66 yards of total offense. I mean. C’mon. There wasn’t a mercy rule, either.

They held Bortenschlager (clearly he was made to be a Maryland quarterback) to 16 yards of passing. That’s not stuff you can make up, unless it’s against Army or Navy. This time tried to throw. It didn’t work.

The Silver Bullets forced two fumbles and had five sacks. No interceptions, but there was almost no need. This front seven is looking scary, and if the secondary starts clicking within the next few weeks, well you know, defense can win championships…

The Surprise Performance:

J.K Dobbins and Mike Weber both had 13 carries each…with Demario McCall only getting three. I don’t know if we’ve ever seen a player hyped to be this important for the Buckeyes and not get playing time since Dontre Wilson. Both great talents. Just doesn’t seem like they’re super needed right now. Great problem to have.

The Turning Point:

This is usually a momentum-stopping moment. Ohio State went up two touchdowns within the first five minutes of the game. Maryland responded with a 100-yard kickoff return by Ty Johnson.

J.T. Barrett responded to the silent Shoe with a three minute-drive capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass to Binjimen Victor.

Maryland didn’t score again until the last five minutes of the fourth quarter.

The Next Victim (Knock-on-Wood)

The Buckeyes will face off with the Nebraska Cornhuskers next Saturday at 7:30 PM. This is the trap game that every team fears. Ohio State is set to face off with Penn State in a few weeks after the bye week, and you know their eyes will be set on that one.

Urban, work your magic.
