How To Gear Up For Groundhog’s Day At Gateway Film Center

24-hours. One movie. Can you do it?

Groundhog’s Day at OSU is always a special occasion. Not so much for the furry critter crawling out of a hole looking for its shadow, rather, for the 24-hour, one movie 12 times showing of Bill Murray’s Groundhog’s Day at Gateway Film Center. In it’s ninth installment, the GFC’s Groundhog’s Day challenge gives movie fanatics the chance to win free movie passes for an entire year if they can sit through all 24-hours of watching Groundhog’s Day on repeat.

Now, achieving this impressive feat isn’t for the unprepared. You need to have your supplies ready to go if you think you can sit through 12 showings of the same movie for 24-hours. This means caffeine, snacks, and more caffeine.

Here’s your supply list for making it through the gauntlet at Gateway!

1.) Energy Drinks or Coffee

If you can stay up for 24 straight hours without the help of some handy caffeine, more power to you. As for the rest of us? We’ll take a large coffee with three shots of espresso and at least three Red Bulls. Just to be safe.

2.) Snacks with a crunch

Popcorn seems like the obvious choice here, but go crazy. Pretzels, potato chips, nachos and cheese—really whatever your heart desires. The crunchy foods provide some much needed stress release when you are sleep deprived.

3.) Healthy snacks

You might be tempted to load up on Sour Patch Kids, Snickers bars, and gummy worms, but once you hit that 4 a.m to 5 a.m. wall, you are going to regret the high amounts of sugar in your system. Instead, try munching on something sweet and healthy like an apple or orange that way your body won’t notice a sudden energy crash midway through the challenge.

4.) WATER

This might seem like common sense, but the effects a cold drink of water to help you stay awake are insane. It helps jolt your metabolism and it’s perfect for when you need to splash a little water in your face to help wake up your tired eyes.

5.) Mints

Beyond helping rid you of popcorn breath, mints are a nice and easy way to help keep you awake. By simply sucking or chomping on a mint, you mouth will be more alert and make you feel awake. The smell of mint helps keep you and others around you awake too! It’s a double win!
