A sequel 14 years in the making and a cinematic landmark’s anniversary headlines the major releases coming to Gateway this weekend.
Incredibles 2 – June 14
It is finally here. The sequel to one of the most beloved animated films, to one of the most beloved superhero films, to one of the most beloved films is finally here. Brad Bird is back to direct this sequel that follows the Parr family, this time with Elastigirl looking to bring superheroes back to the light while Mr. Incredible must deal with Jack-Jack and his numerous abilities. Look to buy your tickets for this one early, as the pre-sales numbers are already record breaking.
Shrek – June 15
While one animated classic has a sequel come to theaters, this animated classic comes back in all of its glory for Gateway’s From Book to Film series. This 2001 film starring Mike Myers as the lovable ogre has humor for the kids and all the satire for adults to catch on to 17 years later, as this movie is just as layered as the day it was released, sort of like onions.
Upgrade – June 15
This brilliantly original action-horror film takes place following the murder of a man’s wife, an event that leaves him paralyzed, and how an experimental cure gives him special abilities to get his vengeance. The movie promises to bring a unique spin to the revenge plot line in director Leigh Whannell’s second ever directorial effort, the first being “Insidious: Chapter 3”.
2001: A Space Odyssey – June 16
Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi epic is back in theaters for its 50th anniversary, and it still looks more visually stunning than the vast majority of movies released in 2018. “2001: A Space Odyssey” has aged better than a fine wine, and this challenging, sometimes excruciating, but always rewarding film comes to Gateway this weekend in a special 70mm format. For fans of Kubrick, for fans of sci-fi or for fans of all-time classic movies, seeing “2001” on the big screen is absolutely essential.
